Becky Brownson’s willingness to go above and beyond for others earns her an Inspired Leader award

CAMPBELLFORD, Ont. – If there’s one characteristic that stands out about Burnbrae Gardens RAI co-ordinator Becky Brownson, it’s her willingness to always stop what she’s doing to help others, says April Faux.

Faux, the home’s administrator and life enrichment co-ordinator, says this is the No. 1 reason why she nominated Brownson for the Inspired Leader award earlier this year.

OMNI Health Care’s Inspired Leader award is presented to staff members from each of the organization’s 18 long-term care homes. The accolade recognizes people who demonstrate outstanding leadership and dedication to their work.

These are all qualities that Brownson possesses, says Faux, adding the RAI co-ordinator is constantly going above and beyond her job description to help others, often working extra hours to assist residents and co-workers.

“Ever since she started she has been the one who will do all the extras; she never says no to anyone, staff or residents,” Faux tells The OMNIway. “She’s got residents constantly at her door, and she will drop what she’s doing to help them.”

Staff members often call Brownson “Dory,” a reference to the fish in the animated film Finding Nemo who sang a song called Just Keep Swimming.

“We can have the worst day and she will be saying, ‘Just keep swimming, girls, just keep swimming,’” Faux says. “She loves her job and she loves the residents. She has one of the most positive attitudes I’ve ever seen. She’s a real bright light.”

Asked how she feels about receiving the Inspired Leader award, Brownson says she’s “honoured,” but adds the qualities the award’s recipients are expected to have are possessed by many other staff members.

“You think of the residents as if they were your own grandparents, so you want to always make sure that they feel at home, that they’re comfortable and that they’re safe,” she says.

Brownson served as a registered practical nurse at Burnbrae Gardens several years ago, but left the home to start a family. When the RAI co-ordinator position became available at the Campbellford long-term care home in 2013, Brownson applied for and was awarded the position.

Inspired Leader and Everyday Hero award recipients were announced at OMNI’s managers’ forum in Kingston in May. Since then, homes have been hosting their own award ceremonies to honour award recipients.
