Village Green residents, staff dine together
There’s nothing like a meal that brings the entire family to the table.
And that’s just what happened at Village Green recently.
The Selby long-term care home hosted a barbecue luncheon Aug. 15 for all to enjoy, residents and staff members alike.
The meal was served in the dining rooms for a home-like supper experience with all members of the Village Green family, Linda Pierce, Village Green administrator, tells The OMNIway.
“We have done this before and the residents really enjoy the event as well as staff,” Linda says.
“It’s a great social event.”
The meal offered a chance to increase engagement of residents and staff members and also spread joy and laughter. Whether residents needed support or just enjoyed socializing, everyone benefitted from the experience, Linda notes.
“The one-to-one attention/support during meal service was amazing and the residents love having the staff sit beside them at the table and enjoy a nice meal.
“The communication and overall support was a true best practice of how a meal should be served and enjoyed,” the administrator says.
A team effort brought the event together.
Maintenance manager Brian MacPherson handled the grill, cooking the burgers and hot dogs and “did a great job.”
Nutritional care staff members prepared the salads which were enjoyed by residents and staff. The meal was topped off with strawberries with whipped cream and ice cream sandwiches.
“Director of care Debbie McTaggart and Miranda Ray, nutritional care manager, were so hands-on to help make this a success.”
Overall, the lunch was a source of pride for the team and Village Green will plan similar future events with residents’ input, the administrator says.
All 66 residents participated and more than 20 staff members were at the tables for the dining experience.
