PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – Personal support worker (PSW) Barb Koshowski is known around Riverview Manor as a staff member who is always going above and beyond for residents, family members and her colleagues at the Peterborough long-term care home.

For the dedication she shows everyone connected to Riverview Manor, Barb received the home’s 2017 Everyday Hero Award during an Oct. 25 ceremony.

Barb has been working at Riverview Manor since it opened more than 35 years ago. Shawn Riel, OMNI Health Care’s chief operating officer, knew Barb from the days when they attended primary school together. But they have also been workmates at Riverview Manor.

“Barb has been devoted to OMNI and to Riverview Manor; we appreciate her devotion,” Shawn says. “I worked with Barb on the floor many years ago, and her passion for the residents is really appreciated by all of us and, most importantly, the residents.”

Barb is often going the extra mile for residents. For instance, she will take time to do a resident’s hair or help them put on makeup, says Riverview Manor administrator Mary Anne Greco.

Barb also shows leadership when it comes to working with residents who have cognitive impairment, Mary Anne adds.

“Barb demonstrates ability to adapt to any newly admitted residents, developing strategies to effectively deal with challenging behaviours,” Mary Anne says. “Barb treats all residents with respect, dignity and kindness.”

PSW Jan Edwards echoes Mary Anne’s sentiments.

“Barb and I are both friends at work and outside of work; it’s easy to like someone who is respectable and kind to other people,” Jan says. “The residents love Barb, and she is a true resident advocate.”

The Everyday Hero Award is given out annually by each of OMNI Health Care’s 18 long-term care homes to recognize staff members who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to residents and co-workers.

OMNI announced this year’s recipients of the Everyday Hero, Inspired Leadership and Elisabeth Hinton Memorial awards at the Quality Forum in Calabogie, Ont. in May. Managers from OMNI’s long-term care homes were presented with the names of the award winners. Homes are presenting the awards during their own ceremonies.

Registered practical nurse Kristen Blundell received Riverview Manor’s Inspired Leadership Award this year. The OMNIway will be featuring a story about Kristen in the coming days.
